A former Kansas basketball player is the star of a new feature-length documentary scheduled to debut this weekend at the Los Angeles Documentary Film Festival in Southern California.

The documentary features former KU forward Silvio De Sousa who played at KU under head coach Bill Self from 2017 to 2020. De Sousa was a critical piece to the 2017-18 team that would eventually advance to the Final Four.

KU would later have to vacate the 2018 Final Four appearance and the wins gained during games De Sousa played in during the 2017-18 season due to his guardian receiving an alleged $2,500 payment from an Adidas executive who was later deemed a “booster” to the program.

The documentary is aptly named “The Last Amateur” as De Sousa was the last student-athlete punished by the NCAA for allegedly receiving payments from a shoe company (Adidas) prior to the implementation of Name, Image and Likeness in college athletics.

The film, which features De Sousa, outspoken NCAA critic and college basketball broadcaster Jay Bilas, and former NBA star Kevin Garnett, examines De Sousa’s collegiate career and his battles with the NCAA and the U.S. justice system, according to a news release on Instagram.

Details on additional streaming and viewing options should be released at a later date.
