Figuring out what drives recruits to schools can often feel like throwing darts with your eyes closed and hoping something lands.
Your immediate response to the statement above can very quickly (and, in several cases, be correct) be that "Players just want whatever school offers the best package."
Yet with the No. 1 player in the nation, Tyran Stokes, it feels like a multi-layered approach to his college choice.
There is the elephant in the room in that Stokes is a Nike athlete and Kansas is an Adidas school. This matter has strong contingents on both sides of the aisle, questioning how much that truly matters.
Another thing that has been repeatedly brought up is Stokes’ relationship with the current Rainier Beach High School assistant coach, Jamal Crawford.
Where Crawford comes into play
Crawford was once recruited to the Michigan Wolverines by current Kansas assistant Kurtis Townsend. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Townsend’s relationship with Crawford was a factor in Stokes’ decision.
“I think it is for real…There's been a huge talk that they've [Kansas] made a big run. I think a lot of that can be from the fact that he's at Rainier Beach, a place where assistant Kurt Townsend has tremendously strong relationships. He recruited Jamal Crawford, an assistant coach there, to Michigan, and is very close to him,” quoted Eric Bossi, the national basketball director at 247Sports.
Kentucky looks to poach Crawford
It has since been revealed that the Wildcats are attempting to bring Crawford onto their staff.
Crawford is someone UK offered a couple of weeks ago and as recently as two days ago, were still pursuing. Situation not over yet https://t.co/NI1hNlNcK5

The back-and-forth battle for Stokes
There is almost a daily instance where something with Stokes will go viral on social media, sending each fanbase into a respective frenzy of attempting to one-up each other.
Stokes has recently reposted his final three schools (Kansas, Oregon, and Kentucky) on his Instagram story, which appeared to shoot down a previous report that Washington and Gonzaga were suddenly involved.
On Tuesday, Stokes replied to an X post asking when he was going to commit and his response seems to point towards a decision in the near future.

Now, with Crawford’s supposed push from Mark Pope and Co., there is every chance that Stokes’ college choice is impacted by whether or not Crawford moves.
No matter what, there is one thing for certain: this is one of the most highly anticipated college decisions the sport has seen for a long time.
