The men's basketball team isn't the only one kicking off the season this week, with the Kansas women's basketball team following suit. The Jayhawks will follow the men's team by one night, with their season opener coming against Omaha in Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks are ready for a big season after performing well in 2025-2026 and were picked No. 5 in the Big 12 Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll. S'Mya Nichols and Jaliya Davis will be the big players to watch for Kansas, especially Nichols, who is entering her senior season, but who knows if this is the end.

With the new five-for-five rule, Nichols could choose to return to Lawrence for one more season, especially if she feels the Jayhawks have another big season in them. However, before thinking about the future, let's focus on the upcoming season first.

This Kansas team has the chance to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2024. While at times this team struggled last season, the return of Nichols, who was recently named to the Naismith Player of the Year Watchlist, and Davis is huge for a team full of homegrown players.

Head coach Brandon Schneider is heading into his 12th season with the Jayhawks, and if he can't get this team back to the big dance this season, it might be time for some change in Lawrence. Luckily, the beginning of the season should be easier for the Jayhawks, only facing three power-conference opponents, one of them ranked in the preseason Top 25. The Jayhawks should be set up really well to start Big 12 play after the start of the year with as few losses as possible.
