For the first time ever in the storied history of these two blue-blood college basketball schools, the Kansas basketball team will play North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

The two schools have played each other 13 times, with the first meeting occurring in the 1957 National Championship game, where the Tar Heels defeated Wilt Chamberlain and the Jayhawks, 54-53, in triple overtime. UNC won six of the first eight meetings, but Kansas has come out on top in the last five meetings.

Kansas defeated UNC in 2022 for the National Championship, despite being down by 15 at the half. Last season, KU won by three, 92-89, in the Phog Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas vs North Carolina: When and where

Kansas basketball has a non-conference schedule filled with quality opponents, and this early-season tilt against the North Carolina Tar Heels is the first. KU will travel to Chapel Hill for a 6:00 pm CT tipoff. The game is in the Dean E. Smith Center, named after UNC’s greatest coach and KU alum, Dean Smith. Smith played on the Jayhawks’ 1952 National Championship team under Phog Allen.

Projected Kansas starting lineup vs North Carolina

Head coach Bill Self has been consistent with his starting lineups so far this year, and it would be surprising if there is a change against the Tar Heels.

  • Darryn Peterson
  • Kohl Rosario
  • Melvin Council Jr.
  • Tre White
  • Flory Bidunga

Rosario has struggled to shoot effectively so far, but he is offering other things to the lineup like defense, rebounding, and overall athleticism. It will be interesting to see how he plays against top-tier competition that matters.

Peterson has been plagued by cramping issues so far this season. They limited his minutes in the exhibition against Louisville, and he didn't play in the practice game against Fort Hays State. Against Green Bay on Monday, he scored 21 points in 22 minutes and played only briefly in the second half. If he's unable to go against UNC, look for Elmarko Jackson to get the nod.

This should be a fun, exciting game to watch and the atmosphere should be rocking.
