Earlier this evening, class of 2026 four-star cornerback JJ Dunnigan announced his decommitment from the Kansas Jayhawks via X.

"After much prayer and thoughtful conversations with my family, I've decided to decommit from the University of Kansas," quoted the cornerback .

"I'm truly grateful for everything the coaches and staff have done for me and for the way they've treated me throughout this process. This was not an easy decision, but I believe it's the best one for me and my future."

According to recruiting outlet 247Sports, Dunnigan was ranked as the third-best prospect to ever commit to the Jayhawks. Dunnigan was touted as the nation's 99th-ranked player.

As it stands, Kansas' class of 2026 recruiting has now taken a massive hit following Dunnigan's decommitment. Offensive lineman Kaden Snyder now ranks as the best prospect committed to Kansas.

The tackle is rated as the nation's 25th best tackle and the third best player out of Kansas.

For the Jayhawks, losing out on Dunnigan is an interesting prospect in terms of the roster outlook. All but DJ Graham II and Syeed Gibbs are underclassmen, which means there were no immediate holes to be filled.

This era of college athletics also opens the door for the transfer portal to dictate mass team overhauls with the snap of a finger, therefore creating the narrative of a diminished need for players out of high school.

Regardless, Kansas' stretch of defensive yardage this season is one that can cause question marks all over the place.

The Jayhawks currently rank 105th in the nation with 427 yards given up per game.
