"This team is exactly who this team was," quoted Kansas Softball head coach Jennifer McFalls after the Jayhawks fell to the Michigan Wolverines in a gut-wrenching 12-10 loss to end the 2026 campaign.
The Jayhawks finished the season with a 36-21 record, which made it McFall’s sixth 20+ win season and second-winning season under the former Texas assistant.Â
"We fought all year long. We just never quit. It came down to the wire, and, honestly, it's a pretty strong, honorable game for these seniors. I just couldn't be more proud of what they did tonight."
How the Jayhawks got to crunch time of the postseasonÂ
Kansas opened the season on a 2-3 slide before finding its composure, rattling off a 16-4 record over its next 20 games before kicking off conference play.Â
In the daunting Big 12, the Jayhawks finished with a 13-10 record, which included series wins over No. 24/22 University of Central Florida, a 1-1 split with No. 20/23 Arizona State, and a sole win over No. 13/16 Oklahoma State.Â
Following a blowout 14-0 loss to the hands of the No. 1 Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals, McFalls and Co. were selected for postseason play.Â
Kansas’ opening NCAA Regional matchup was scheduled against Michigan, inside Norman, Oklahoma’s bracket. The Jayhawks pulled off a nail-biting 1-0 bottom-of-the-8th winner from a walkoff single via sophomore Ava Wallace.Â
"That was a great defensive and pitching game for both sides," said McFalls postgame. "Getting down to the wire, I was just so proud of this team, their grit and commitment to finishing the game out."
However, Kansas’ bats stayed cool the following day against the hosting Sooners, in a 9-0 thumping that was deemed a run-rule in the fifth inning.Â
The Jayhawks were then forced to rematch the Wolverines later that same Saturday.Â
Kansas’ defense unravels at the wrong time
It took little time for KU to reach a 3-0 lead, however, a bottom-of-the-first collapse gave the Wolverines a 5-3 lead.Â
The Big Ten side then added another three runs to extend the lead to 8-3, before the Jayhawks pulled it back to a 9-6 deficit heading into the fifth inning. A shootout sixth inning proved to not be enough at the end of the day ending with the Wolverines holding on to 12-10 scoreline, despite McFalls’ side notching two more hits than Michigan at a 16-14 clip.
Stats that defined a stellar season
Through conference play, Kansas finished the season batting as the Big 12’s sixth-best team with a .298 average. The Jayhawks’ 146 runs finished No. 4 in the conference, and their whopping 38 home runs finished No. 3 in conference.Â
Senior outfielder Presley Limbaugh led the Jayhawks in batting with a .419 average, ranking No. 7 in the conference. Junior Anna Soles ranked No. 14 in the Big 12 with a .377 batting average.Â
Catcher Ella Boyer took the nation by storm finishing with an outstanding 10 homeruns in conference play. Those 10 homers ranked second in the Big 12. Senior infielder Hailey Cripe, followed behind Boyer with seven homers on the season.Â
The 2026 campaign was one that still represented some slight inconsistencies; however, for McFalls, after signing a contract extension in 2023 that runs through the 2027 season, this team showed several bright spots and was a few missed plays away from making it even further, proving that right now she is the best candidate to lead KU forward.
