Yesterday, No. 23 Kansas women's soccer dropped their first result of the season in a 0-0 draw against the Utah State Aggies.
"Today was a typical Sunday soccer game where I think both teams competed hard," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said to Kansas Athletics. "Both teams had some quality but they had heavy legs. I think this was especially hard for us in the first road game and the altitude. You can empathize with the players if their gas tank wasn't full. I think it was a fair result. I'd like to think that this is a game that we expect to win, but we didn't do enough today."
Lie described the game perfectly, both sides were struggling to muster much momentum and the Jayhawks' once vibrant attack had begun to slow down against the Mountain West team.
Utah State held Kansas to just two first half shots, while propping seven shots of their own on Kansas keeper Sophie Dawe. Dawe had to make three first half saves against a fluid Utah State attack.
As the second half went on, Kansas did show improvement, flipping the script with eight shots compared to the Aggies' two while forcing State goalkeeper Taylor Rath to make three saves in the second period.
This result by no means derails any of the progress made by Kansas thus far this season. The Jayhawks marched to a smooth 3-0-0 start which saw nine goals scored and just four conceded with a 5-2 win over Missouri State, a 1-0 win over South Dakota State and a 3-2 win over Utah Valley before the draw against Utah State.
Kansas will be given a bit of a deserved break before taking on the No. 3 ranked Florida State Seminoles this Thursday (August 28th) at 7 P.M. CT as KU will welcome the Seminoles to Rock Chalk Park.
