Kansas’ quarterback situation is drawing a lot of attention right now.
And two things can be right. Firstly, fans aren’t wrong to have hopes of a stellar season, after the entire offseason was focused on this everlasting battle between redshirt sophomore Isaiah Marshall and redshirt junior Cole Ballard.
Eventually, Marshall was tipped as the starter just two weeks before the season launched against LIU.
But, fans must also remember that this is Marshall’s first real experience as quarterback, as his snaps last season mostly came in either running packages or with garbage time remaining.
That being said, Marshall hasn’t had the most blistering start to his redshirt sophomore season.
Through his three games thus far, Marshall has tallied 649 yards across a 53.7% completion rate, throwing for 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. On the ground, Marshall has added 124 yards.

Not terrible numbers by any means, but when looking at former KU quarterback David McComb’s performances so far this season at Miami (OH), it can dampen the mood around Kansas’ situation even more.
McComb is enjoying a strong first season
McComb was a former 3-star quarterback in the class of 2025 who was ranked as the nation’s 42nd-best quarterback and No. 15 prospect from Oklahoma. Coming out of Edmond Memorial High School, McComb held offers from UAB, Tulsa, Tulane, Toledo, North Texas, Akron, Memphis, Virginia Tech and the Jayhawks.
McComb spent his sole season with KU far down the depth chart, as expected, with Jalon Daniels still finishing his final season, and Ballard and Marshall each sharing the remaining snaps.
Following Kansas’ second 5-7 year running, McComb made the move to the NCAA Transfer Portal. Just under a month after his entry, McComb joined the Mid-American Conference, where he was named starting quarterback.
McComb’s first three games of his collegiate career have seen him pitted up against Pitt, Holy Cross and Cincinnati, culminating in a 1-2 start for the RedHawks.
Through those three games, McComb has tallied 809 yards, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception on a 62.2% completion rate. McComb has also added 2 scores on the ground; however, he is not naturally a running quarterback, with 12 yards across 15 attempts. It is also worth noting that sacks in college football count against the quarterback’s rushing stats.

Of course, there is still plenty of time for Marshall to grow into his new offense. If there is anything about Andy Kotelnicki, it is that he runs complicated sets that aren’t particularly easy to get a 100% grasp on.
Against the Sun Devils, center Kasen Carpenter launched multiple snaps over Marshall’s head, forcing the former Michigan state champ to down the play before it even truly began, which didn’t help Marshall’s stat line.
