Kansas basketball player Paul Mbiya decided not to enter the transfer portal and will stay at Kansas. This is great news for head coach Bill Self and the Jayhawks.
Mbiya's saga has been an interesting one. It seemed as if the sophomore center would enter the portal, but he never officially made himself available for a transfer. Now, with Mbiya firmly back in the fold and freshman forward/center Davion Adkins on the team, Self is looking for depth on the interior and not necessarily a star.
What makes this story special is because of how it unfolded. For once, we are seeing a player do what he thinks is best for himself and not what others are telling him to do. It is a refreshing change from the money grab that college basketball has become.
Paul Mbiya's reasons to stay at Kansas are refreshing and should give everyone hope
Early in April, it appeared that Mbiya was leaving Kansas with most of the eligible players from last year's roster. As time went on, however, the young center never placed his name in the transfer portal.
Last week, Henry Greenstein of the Lawrence Journal-World hinted that there might be some discord between Mbiya and his agent, Yacine Fylla.
Paul Mbiya is "100% jayhawks" and wants to return to KU but has not yet reached a final agreement.

"We are trying to get him the deal he deserves," his management Yacine Fylla told the Journal-World via DM. "He is on emotion. We need to help him understand it's also a business."
Clearly, Mbiya wanted to stay at KU, and his agent wanted him to get as big of a payday as possible, or at least explore his options outside of Kansas. In the end, Mbiya didn't fill out or file his portal paperwork.
What made this whole situation special was Mbiya's statement that made up his official announcement that he was staying put. Dushawn London of 247Sports tweeted the statement on X. Please click more on the tweet below for the full impact of Mbiya's statement.

“I’m staying at the University of Kansas.
This decision comes from the heart. Through every challenge, every doubt, and every moment of adversity, I’ve grown stronger. I’m… pic.twitter.com/AvE6QS6mqd
The most important part of this statement, one that should give hope to all college basketball fans that not everyone is ruled by the bags of money, is toward the end.
"“No pressure can break me. No obstacle can stop me. And no amount of money will ever define me or buy my values.Paul Mbiya
You can’t buy heart.
You can’t buy loyalty.
You can’t buy what’s inside me.”"
Paul Mbiya took a stand. He made the decision that was best for him, and he stayed at Kansas. He will receive a NIL package of some sort from the Jayhawks, to be sure, but he didn't feel the need to explore his options. Maybe he could have earned more elsewhere, but he knew where he wanted to be and decided a bigger possible payday wasn't as important to him as being where he knew in his heart he wanted to be.
After the defections of Flory Bidunga and Bryson Tiller, Paul Mbiya will be a hero to Kansas fans. In this age where money is more important to most players than fit and development, Mbiya should be a hero to all college basketball fans. He stood up to all the outside voices and decided his immediate future based on emotion and what his heart was telling him. Good for him. It is refreshing, and it gives us hope that more and more players will follow his lead.
