Say the NCAA announced an “All-Transfer Team,” would it be hard-pressed to say Melvin Council Jr. deserved to be in that? Would we have to be seeing in life in Jayhawk-tinted glasses? Personally, I would say it is not unrealistic for the Council to have made that list.
So far this season, Council has averaged 12.9 points per game, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists on a 39.1% field goal rate.
In previous iterations, we have spoken about several players who one day could be the player commonly deemed as a “stat sheet stuffer.” There is no potential for Council to do so because he already is one, and he has the stats to prove it.
In nine games this season, Council has notched 10+ points. Council, at times, has shown inconsistencies in his scoring. For example, against No. 25 UNC in the second game of the season, Council shot a poor 2-11 mark from the field.
Yet just over a month later, against NC State, oh, Council notched 36 points with a whopping nine three-pointers in a 77-76 win. Since then, in each of his two games against Towson, a 73-49 win and a 90-61 win against the Davidson Wildcats, Council has totaled 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Something that head coach Bill Self has raved about is Council’s ability move at insane speed, and he is not wrong. Council flies up and down the court, launching fast breaks on a moment's notice.
Yes, there are questions over his reliability as Council’s days are either extremely hot or extremely cold, yet his ceiling could become a massive factor come March.
