Dylan Edwards’ transfer to Kansas is a fantastic one-up on a team that has dominated the Jayhawks since 2008.

247Sports rated Edwards as a 3-star transfer out of Kansas State. He finished as the portal’s 21st-ranked running back, in a Kansas class that ended the 2025 portal ranked as the country’s 53rd-best nationally and 13th-best in the Big 12.

In all honesty, if it wasn’t for a 2025 campaign that resulted in Edwards playing in just 4 games for the Wildcats, that rating would likely be a lot higher. However, his stock took an inevitable hit after he gained 205 yards and two touchdowns on 34 attempts before leaving the team that November.

Edwards' standout campaign came in 2024 when Kansas State finished with a 9-4 overall mark that saw the speedster track 74 carries for 546 yards and 5 touchdowns, averaging 7.4 per attempt. Edwards also added another two touchdowns through the air to go with 133 receiving yards. Against Kansas that same year, Edwards totaled 208  all-purpose yards in the Wildcats’ narrow 29-27 thriller win.

When fully healthy, Edwards ranks among the nation's elite running backs.

When speaking to the media at Big 12 Media Days earlier this month, KU linebacker Tre Lathan seemed slightly relieved that Edwards was set to play for his team, even if it is for just one season.

Lathan and Edwards actually squared off during the 2024 season and while Edwards was a backup to DJ Giddens, the then-sophomore still measured out 45 yards from scrimmage and an extra 34 yards in the return game in what turned into a blowout 45-18 win for Kansas State. Lathan finished that matchup with 7 tackles.

Lathan speaks on a great trait that Edwards brings to the Jayhawks

“Having him is good. He's a quiet guy, but he loves football. That's the type of guy that you need out there, and in the college football landscape, who just love football and don't worry about anything else, just nothing but ball.”

In the spring, Edwards was presented in front of the media, where he was prodded over why he made this move between such bitter rivals, and beyond anything he could say, the most notable thing the running back exuded was pure excitement to just get back on the field after an extended stay out thanks to an ankle injury that never allowed him to get back into full shape last season.

Edwards will be a part of a revamped running back corps that also includes promising Syracuse transfer Yasin Willis, as a one-two punch that Kansas fans hope will knock defenses off balance. Edwards is providing the stellar speed down the sideline and quick-twitch movements, while Willis is adding a lot more of a bruiser dynamic that wears the team down through the course of the 60 minutes.

Last season, the Jayhawks finished their 5-7 season averaging 157.8 rushing yards per game, good enough for No. 60 in the nation.
