Last night firmly wrapped up Kansas’ chances at a 12th Big 12 Tournament title thanks to a 69-47 loss at the hands of the No. 2 Houston Cougars. The Jayhawks hardly got a dribble all game long, and it took little time for Houston to grab a lead, which extended up to 24 points.

While the Jayhawks were always going to be the underdogs heading into Friday night’s semifinal, a thumping loss against a projected No. 2 seed might have leveled the expectations with this iteration of the Jayhawks.

Kansas projected second-lowest seed under Bill Self

In CBS Sports’ latest bracketology projections, the Jayhawks will be handed a No. 4 seed.

In the career of Bill Self at Kansas, this is only behind last season’s No. 7 seed that ended in the Jayhawks being dumped out of the first round in the NCAA Tournament by the Arkansas Razorbacks in a 79-72 loss.

Kansas’ path to this estimate

Bill Self’s squad finished the season on a 4-4 stretch, which quickly began to sling questions about several aspects of the team, with the biggest revolving around a sluggish offense and a defense that gets exploited when big man Flory Bidunga is out of the picture.

As it stands, the Jayhawks are projected to take on the No. 13 High Point Panthers. The Panthers are currently on a 14-game winning run, which recently saw them collect a Big South Tournament title for the second time in their history.

The Jayhawks were placed in the East Region, where the No. 1 seed was handed to the Duke Blue Devils, and included teams the likes of Utah State, St. John’s, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Villanova, and Purdue.

As conference tournaments are still wrapping up, nothing will be set in stone until Sunday night. The selection committee is set to finalize and reveal its results at 5 p.m. CT with streaming available on CBS.
