The Kansas Jayhawks are set to field a very different roster than in previous years. Gone are the days of quarterback Jalon Daniels and running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. here come the days of Dylan Edwards and a potential QB battle comprising of Cole Ballard, Chase Jenkins and Isaiah Marshall next season.Â
Having to deal with a team importing 31 transfers and 12 freshmen via high school begs for consistency throughout the program. A consistency that head coach Lance Leipold has been able to uphold well so far through his five seasons, and has just taken another big step forward after signing three-star class of 2027 commit quarterback Chance Thomas.Â

A look at Thomas
Thomas is currently rated as the nation’s No. 27 quarterback in his class and the second-best quarterback from California behind Ohio State four-star commit Brady Edmunds, according to 247Sports.
Thomas held offers from several power-conference schools, including SMU, Wisconsin, Washington, Utah, UCF, Stanford, North Carolina, Iowa State, Duke, Arkansas, Arizona State, Auburn and Arizona, before choosing the Jayhawks earlier Monday.Â
Thomas ultimately chose the Jayhawks over Auburn and Utah.
Overall, Thomas is rated as the nation’s No. 729 recruit and is Kansas’ highest-rated prospect with an 88 overall grade, filing ahead of wideout Deng Tong (87), offensive tackle Derek Gonzalez (87) and running back Trey Stewart (86).
As of publishing, the Jayhawks are ranked as having the nation’s No. 57 overall class for 2027.Â
Where does Thomas fit in?Â
Bringing in a high school QB for the 2027 class was crucial for Leipold as Ballard and Jenkins are redshirt juniors, and Marshall is just a redshirt sophomore, giving Thomas no first-year pressure to step up and be the guy, but also paving a path for him to develop under returning associate head coach Andy Kotelnicki and passing game coordinator Jim Zebrowski who 247Sports tips as a main recruiter in bringing Thomas to KU.Â
Thomas is currently ranked as Kansas’ No. 58 all-time recruit according to 247Sports.
