Well, the game is played in four quarters for a reason. Now as of writing, yes, Kansas is still down to the No. 9 Texas Tech Raiders with a 21-17 deficit. However, the momentum has fiercely swung in favor of Lance Leipold’s Kansas Jayhawks.
Before you knew it, Kansas was down 21-0 and the packed cauldron that is Jones AT&T Stadium was reaching fever-pitch, but Kansas never lost its cool.
In the first quarter, the Jayhawks gave up 176 yards of total offense compared to their meek 36. Yet in typical Lance Leipold fashion, Kansas began to fight back with experienced quarterback Jalon Daniels.
A fluent Daniels-led 75-yard touchdown drive chewed up 4:23 of the second quarter, before both sides traded punts, with the Red Raiders having to settle for backup QB Will Hammond, who replaced the electric Behren Morton. Morton suffered what appeared to be an ankle injury before leaving play, not returning since.
After a Hammond Daniels zipped another 49-yard drive, and before you knew it, what looked like a potential record-breaking blowout turned into a 21-14 Texas Tech lead.
Hammond continued to struggle on his next drive and just before half, with the Jayhawks soaring. Transfer Laith Marjan added a ludicrous 55-yard field goal to trim the Texas Tech lead to just four, at 21-17.
As it stands, Texas Tech has outpaced Kansas at a 272-204 clip, yet Daniels has accounted for 176 yards and two touchdowns through the air with 18-21 passing, which leads all quarterbacks. Texas Tech has outrushed Kansas with a massive 164-28 margin.
