Bill Self opted to return to Kansas, dispelling the retirement rumors that swirled after Kansas’s second-round NCAA Tournament loss to St. John’s. Now, a few weeks later, he’s buried in one of the most difficult roster rebuilds in the country, with Darryn Peterson heading to the NBA, Tre White and Melvin Council Jr. out of eligibility, and seven players currently in the Transfer Portal, including Bryson Tiller and Flory Bidunga.

Kansas has yet to make a transfer addition, but the Jayhawks could be closing in on a major one with Utah transfer Terrence Brown heading to campus for a visit, according to Jon Rothstein. The 6-foot-3 rising senior has already visited North Carolina, and reportedly has a Kentucky visit on deck.

Kansas needs to make a statement with Terrence Brown on a transfer visit

Self has a solid recruiting class, currently headlined by five-star point guard Taylen Kinney. It will be an elite group if he can close the deal with Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 player in the class, though that won’t be easy.

Stokes reportedly hates Adidas shoes, which, along with an NIL partnership with Nike, is pushing him towards Kentucky. There is also a growing expectation that the talented 6-foot-7 playmaking wing is waiting to commit until he sees how each roster shapes up. That further complicates things because the money allocated for a recruit of his caliber essentially can’t be spent in case he eventually commits.

The fit with Brown isn’t perfect. He’s a ball-dominant guard, which could be complicated with Kinney, especially because neither is a prolific three-point shooter. That gets further complicated if Stokes comes to Kansas because he will force both Brown and Kinney to play off-ball more, and unless Self adds serious front-court three-point shooting, the spacing will be clunky.

Another year of spacing issues would be frustrating after the Jayhawks fans spent a season watching Peterson and Council struggling to drive into the crowded paint. Still, Brown is a dynamic enough scorer to remain a top target for the Jayhawks. Even if it’s not seamless, they could make it work, and Self desperately needs a win, so prying him away from UNC would be significant.

Brown’s visit will likely go a long way toward determining whether or not he can be swayed from UNC. Pulling that off would be a major first domino to fall in a crucial offseason for a blue blood program that hasn’t made it beyond the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament since it won it all in 2022.
