College athletics have never experienced a more muddled transitional period than what fans are seeing now. The future is unclear, and Kansas basketball fans should be fearful of that future.
Kansas is undoubtedly one of only a handful of true blueblood basketball programs in the country. Four national championships, two of which came under head coach Bill Self's stewardship. KU has a record 62 conference championships, 17 of those with Self at the helm, including 14 in a row Big 12 regular-season titles. The Jayhawks have also made the NCAA Tournament a record 37 consecutive seasons, including all 23 of Self's seasons at the school.
Bill Self has been the most successful coach in the history of one of the bluest blueblood schools in the nation. Fans should be careful wishing too hard for a coaching change. There may not be a candidate who can come close to duplicating Self's success.
Bill Self has struggled with the NIL Era and with transfers, but he seems to be figuring it out
The first few years of the NIL Era haven't been kind to Kansas and Self. KU has exited March Madness in the first weekend in all four seasons since winning it all in 2022. He's seemingly hit it big with transfers like Hunter Dickinson, AJ Storr, and Rylan Griffen, but the latter two didn't work out.
Statistically, Dickenson was successful at KU. Unfortunately, Self was unable to surround him with enough talent for the team to be successful. Storr and Griffen just weren't fits.
Self has also seen talented players leave the program for more money and more playing time. Before NIL, these players would have stayed and developed at KU and been key players as upperclassmen. With players leaving at such a rate, it created a lack of talented depth.
Self appears to have figured it out to some extent. His recruiting is still top-notch. Darryn Peterson was one of the top two recruits in his class. Freshmen Bryson Tiller, Kohl Rosario, Paul Mbiya, and Samis Calderon all look like they can be the building blocks for something special going forward. And this doesn't even include Flory Bidunga, who is a game-changing defender and an improving offensive force.
The current recruiting class looks just as talented. Taylen Kinney, Davion Adkins, Trent Perry, and Luke Barnett look like a group that could complement the current roster very successfully. In the NIL era, however, will KU be able to retain those recruits and the talent already on the roster if Self steps away?
The transfers were also way more successful this season. Melvin Council Jr. and Tre White quickly became crowd favorites for their hard-nosed playing styles and their incredible attitudes. Self seems to have figured out what kind of transfers he needs to look for now.
No true Kansas fan should want to take that chance. Self still gives the Kansas brand some powerful sway, even with the disappointing ends to the last several seasons. No other available coach will have two national championships.
It will be nearly impossible for another coach to maintain the overall excellence Bill Self has at KU. No one should want to see Self leave. Of course, one aspect of this discussion that isn't clear is his Self's health. No one wants Self to put his health at risk by coaching. Fans want him IF he has a clean bill of health and isn't endangering himself.
Regardless, fans shouldn't be so quick to call for Self's resignation. North Carolina has been inconsistent since Roy Williams retired. Indiana hasn't been the same since Bob Knight was ousted. Villanova has faded from the top 10 without Jay Wright. These are just a few cautionary tales for Kansas fans to consider.
Hopefully, Self is healthy, and he does want to continue as the Kansas basketball coach. The current and incoming players give fans hope that the future is incredibly bright, and there are no promises a new coach could improve the roster.
Bill Self should have a job at Kansas as long as he wants it and is healthy. Any other talk is just nonsense.
