Kansas basketball suffers ninth conference loss vs. Houston, most in Bill Self tenure

This season has been far from fun.

Some Kansas basketball fans had bought into the talks of a “new season” after the Jayhawks won back-to-back meetings over Big 12 opponents, but those quickly died down once KU fell at home to Texas Tech over the weekend.

Nobody had hope heading into Monday’s road tilt at Houston. A 4-7 road record entering the contest wasn't too promising. However, Kansas found a way to lose in a way that only the 2024-25 Jayhawk squad could.

Kansas basketball commits mistake after mistake in Houston loss

It was a game plagued by turnovers and a lack of effort on the boards. The Jayhawks gave the ball away a ghastly 20 times, including five in the final six minutes of the contest. Houston also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, leading to the Cougars taking 26 more shot attempts than KU.

While the performance was more encouraging than last year‘s 30-point thrashing in Fertitta Center, the Jayhawks squandered multiple chances to win the game. Despite holding the Cougars to a lackluster 35.3% field goal percentage and getting LJ Cryer in foul trouble early in the second half, the mental lapses proved to be too costly.

Hunter Dickinson led the way with a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double, though he committed a game-high seven turnovers. KJ Adams scored 15 points with effective free throw shooting, and David Coit connected on four 3-pointers to keep Kansas in the game.

KU’s three starting guards offered little to nothing on both ends of the floor. Dajuan Harris, Zeke Mayo, and Rylan Griffen combined to score nine points on 4-for-12 shooting with nine turnovers.

To avoid a .500 record in conference play, Kansas must defeat Arizona this Saturday on its Senior Day. If the Jayhawks’ losing streak persists, it would be the first time since the 1983-84 season that they lost their regular season home finale.
