The Kansas Jayhawks added a big piece to their 2025-26 roster this week as St. Bonaventure transfer Melvin Council Jr. announced he would be headed to Lawrence for his senior year.
Council, a 6-foot-4 point guard, was a key weapon for the Bonnies this year, averaging 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. He also led the A-10 Conference in steals (69 total over their 32 games this season) and was named to the All-Conference Third Team.
Council, who will be in his final year of eligibility, becomes the third transfer pickup this offseason for head coach Bill Self and his staff who now have just four remaining roster spots to fill for this upcoming season.
Here’s what Self had to say about Council following the news of his commitment:
"We're very excited to announce Melvin Council Jr. has signed," Self said. "He's a 6-4, long, rangy guard that can play with the ball and without the ball. Melvin will remind our fans physically and athletically of Tyshawn Taylor. He's a superior athlete who can score the ball and has the potential to be one of the more elite defenders that we've had in recent memory.”
The comparison to Tyshawn Taylor is one that should have KU fans excited about the potential Council brings to this team. Taylor was a tough-nosed point guard who wasn’t afraid to attack the rim, create his own shot, or create for others. If he is anything like senior-year Tyshawn Taylor that will be a huge addition for this year’s team.
The addition of Council seems to be a continuing trend for Self this offseason as he aims to bring some toughness back to this KU roster with incoming transfers Tre White (Illinois) and Jayden Dawson (Loyola-Chicago) known to share that trait as well.
Council himself made a splash on social media recently after posting “If you ain’t a dog, you dog food” to his Instagram account following his commitment.
This KU team was in need of some dogs and it looks like they found a hungry one in Council.
