The Kansas basketball team suffered its third home loss of the season yesterday, falling 78-73 to Texas Tech in front of the Allen Fieldhouse crowd. It was the continuation of what has been a nightmare year for the Jayhawks, who now have 10 losses and recently had their AP Top 25 streak broken.
KU guard Zeke Mayo struggled greatly in the defeat, making only 1-of-7 shot attempts and turning the ball over five times. His most crucial miss came with less than 10 seconds to go when he air-balled a 3-pointer that would have tied the game.
However, the hatred toward Mayo has gone too far. The South Dakota State transfer posted four screenshots of people on Instagram sending him derogatory and racist messages in his direct messages following the contest. Mayo has since deleted his X and Instagram accounts.

Zeke Mayo receives threatening DMs after Texas Tech loss
Mayo took responsibility for his poor play in the post but also acknowledged the threatening DMs he was receiving. It goes without saying that there is no room for that kind of language in sports or anywhere for that matter.
Many Kansas fans commented that they had his back before he deleted his accounts. The KU Hoops social media account also posted a statement from Bill Self, where he said that the blame should be placed on him for the Jayhawks' struggles, not players like Mayo.

Some of the perpetrators seem to be individuals fueled by betting motives.
Athletic Director Travis Goff commented his feelings on the matter in an X post.
"These aren’t Jayhawks. They’re not ours. Driven by gambling and hate. They’ve never competed a day in their life. To Zeke and all our guys - the Jayhawk family loves you and will always ride with you through thick and thin."
