The 2024-25 Kansas basketball team was dubbed a national title contender shortly into the offseason. Returning starters Hunter Dickinson, Dajuan Harris, and KJ Adams were later joined by a handful of high-profile transfers such as AJ Storr, Rylan Griffen, and Zeke Mayo.

While the Jayhawks would have still been Big 12 favorites with that roster, head coach Bill Self decided to make a late addition in August. It now looks like one of the best offseason moves the program could have made. A player who was once considered an afterthought now looks like a mainstay in the rotation, as David “Diggy” Coit was a man on a mission this Tuesday in KU’s scrimmage victory over Washburn.

Diggy Coit was a fantastic pick-up for the Kansas basketball team

After going scoreless and missing all five shot attempts in his debut against Arkansas, Coit turned it up a notch for the home crowd. He wasted no time in the first half, scoring 11 points through the first six minutes. The 5-foot-11 point guard looked like a top candidate to become a fan favorite this year.

Coit finished with a game-high 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting. He connected on 5-of-10 attempts from 3-point range, making it known that he is one of the team’s premier shooters. His plus-minus was an absurd +44.

Coach Self inserted him into the starting lineup in place of Mayo, who struggled greatly in game one. While the lineup combination of point guard Dajuan Harris and Coit was relatively undersized, his offensive contributions quickly made up for it.

Coit said he had never experienced a crowd as rowdy as Allen Fieldhouse in his home debut. He’s in for quite the ride when the Jayhawks start playing meaningful games.

We know Self is relatively stubborn with his rotations and will still prioritize veterans such as Harris at the guard position. However, Coit’s performance on Tuesday was reminiscent of Remy Martin in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Considering Jayhawk fans did not expect him to be on the roster two months ago, it appears the coaching staff hit a home run by adding this potential X-factor.
