The rise of Kansas baseball has been one of the game's best stories since the turn of the decade.
Dan Fitzgerald took over a middling program and has flipped it into a powerhouse. Fitzgerald’s records since his arrival in 2023 have been 25-32, 31-23, 43-17 and, most recently, 45-18, in a season that ended with a Super Regional appearance and four selections in the MLB Draft.
Just when things didn’t look like they could get any better for the surging Jayhawks, the Iowa Hawkeyes announced one of the coolest things possible as Kansas and Iowa are set to take part in a Fall game at the historic Field of Dreams.

Kansas athletics making another milestone move
By the time the October 10 exhibition arrives, it will have showcased three MLB games since 2021, but the matchup between the Hawkeyes and the Jayhawks will serve as the field’s first game between two major colleges.
In August 2021, the Chicago White Sox took down the New York Yankees in a 9-8 thriller; nearly one year later, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-2, and after a four-year wait, the Philadelphia Phillies will be taking on the Minnesota Twins next month.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT tickets can be purchased for $12, and no streaming platform has been announced as of publishing.
Last October, Kansas announced the Jayhawks will be taking part in the Union Jack Classic on the gridiron, making their conference duel against the Arizona State Wildcats the sport’s first-ever college game inside the historic Wembley Stadium, with Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff set live outside the stadium.
Speaking of football, if there is one snag in this upcoming event, it is that the Jayhawks’ football team will be taking on the Utah Utes that same day at Rice-Eccles Stadium. No time has been announced yet for the kickoff, creating bit of an unknown.
Last season, when the Utes and the Jayhawks squared off in the season finale, a fourth-quarter collapse where KU was outscored 21-7 created back-to-back bowl-less seasons for Lance Leipold, ending the 2025 season on a three-game slide.
A 1 p.m. CT first pitch can create some interesting scenarios. Firstly, the game must be put on television; if not, then these other two points will be rendered useless.
If Kansas plays the Utes on an evening or night slot, then the exhibition serves as a perfect warmup before a big game, but if the Jayhawks start with an earlier kick, then there is every chance these two collide.
However, there is still an eon before that kickoff time gets announced, so there is no point in worrying about it now.
Last season, the Hawkeyes finished with a 33-23 record in a season that was halted at the hands of the Purdue Boilermakers in the Big Ten tournament. Through some roster and staff changes, Iowa is set to embark on another season under the ever-consistent Rick Heller. The Jayhawks are 11-9 against Iowa all-time.
