Kansas fans have probably never checked the internet for an injury update more in their life than they have this week, with No. 13 BYU up next for the Jayhawks on the hardwood. After leaving the game late against Colorado and being out against rival Kansas State, star freshman Darryn Peterson could make his return from his ankle injury against the Cougars.

College basketball analyst Jon Rothstein just gave Jayhawks fans the update they were hoping for. Rothstein posted on social media that Peterson is expected to play against No. 13 BYU, setting up the freshman showdown fans are dying for. Rothstein is reporting the news based on comments from head coach Bill Self.

Anytime Peterson has been on the court for the Jayhawks, Kansas has been a different team. Peterson is currently averaging 21.6 points per game, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists. He draws a lot of defenders to him, opening up shots for other players, but even when he is well defended, he finds ways to get to the basket.

Without Peterson on the court, the Jayhawks have struggled more offensively, so their defense has had to step up. With Peterson, Kansas is averaging 81.8 points per game, whereas they average just 74.7 per game without him on the court.

No. 13 BYU is going to be a tough matchup for the Jayhawks, especially going up against AJ Dybantsa, who is projected to go right after Peterson in the NBA Draft at No. 2. Dybantsa has been on a roll as of late, recently dropping 40 points against Utah, and was a large part in the Cougars almost beating No. 1 Arizona with 24 points.

The matchup of Peterson and Dybantsa is what everyone has been looking forward to, so if Peterson is good to go, it should be an electric matchup. There has been no update on whether or not Peterson will be on a minutes restriction, but if he is feeling good, Self may let him take over the game.
