Incoming Kansas star already headlines 2027 NBA Draft board

The Kansas Jayhawks have been raking in talent from the high school ranks over the last two seasons.

Kansas isn’t even 48 hours removed from seeing their latest star, Darryn Peterson, achieve his dreams of joining the NBA and there are already projections of another lottery pick being made in the 2027 NBA Draft.

While Peterson didn’t get to have a season, either he or KU fans would have hoped, as injury crises kept him away from fully developing a chemistry with his compatriots. The Jayhawks have another chance at getting things right, with latest five-star Tyran Stokes, as James Fletcher III of On3 has Stokes No. 1 on his “2027 NBA Mock Draft: Way-too-early projections for next year's class,” article.

In a video from Shreyas Laddha of the Kansas City Star, ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla spoke on Stokes’ expected impact on next year’s Jayhawk team.

“I mean, he's big and strong. He can score inside, he can score outside. And he needs to be polished up with some maturity and coaching from Bill Self, but the tools are there. I expect him to have a major impact not only on Kansas, but on the Big 12,” quoted Fraschilla.

Since the 2022-23 season, KU has failed to win the Big 12 regular-season title or make it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Over the last three seasons, the Jayhakws have compiled 35 losses, just one less than in the five-season span beforehand.

Of course, keeping these insane standards that Self has set over his legendary career feels far-fetched, but there is no doubt that there has been at least a slight drop in quality over the last few years.

However, with Stokes set to be in the fold soon, the nation’s No. 1 player will be tasked with doing his part in repairing Kansas’ reputation and bringing Kansas back to the mountaintop.

How is the team set up for Stokes’ arrival?

Stokes will immediately come in as the top dog of a team that is stocked with youth. Alongside him will be five-star guard Taylen Kinney. Kinney even hinted at attempting to recruit Stokes to KU at his own commitment, saying that following the imminent commitment of Trent Perry, he was then “trying to get Tyran [Stokes].”

The Jayhawks are also set to reel in much-improved scoring depth across the court in a freshman class comprising guard Luke Barnett, the small forward Perry, power forward/center Davion Adkins. Along with transfers like Christian Reeves, Leory Blyden Jr. Dennis Parker Jr. and Keanu Dawes. Each addition will go a long way in improving the nation’s No. 161 scoring offense from last year.

According to recruiting outlet 247Sports, KU is setting a high bar by bringing in the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class and No. 29 transfer class so far.

While Self has alluded to the possibility of trying to land a “steal” through the portal, with each passing day, the numbers dwindle and with questions over how much budget is left, the chances for any more reinforcements, steals or not, grow dimmer and dimmer.
