The Jayhawks have had an injury-ridden season. If you need proof, look at the running back availability issues that Kansas has faced. Daniel Hishaw Jr. was meant to take his name to the next level this season, but nagging injuries have forced Iowa transfer Leshon Williams to step into the spotlight. Williams has done a good job and ranks as the 21st-best rusher in the Big 12, with 391 yards and six touchdowns, but the subtle fear of an injury to Williams has kept Kansas’ rushing attack pinned back. On the season, Kansas ranks 75th in the nation with 143.3 yards per game.
When Kansas convincingly took down the Oklahoma State Cowboys last weekend, it felt like the first time in forever, the Jayhawks were able to use both Hishaw and Williams in a convincing 38-21 win. The pair combined for 142 yards and three touchdowns. For the first time this season, the pressure felt off the shoulders of quarterback Jalon Daniels, who only had 19 throws and still found a productive 110 yards and two touchdowns.
Earlier this week, offensive coordinator Jim Zebrowski spoke with the media over the boon it is to have both backs able to contribute.
“Much easier job, obviously, you don’t have to worry about if something happens. ‘What are you going to do next?’ or whatnot. So it was just fun to get them both out there and then get the ground game going…It was just good to get those guys both healthy again.”
On the season, Williams has totaled 391 yards and six touchdowns, toting an impressive 5.5 yards per carry. Hishaw has raked in 363 yards for 4.8 yards per carry and four touchdowns on the year.
In order for the Jayhawks to be successful this season and end things on a good note, there must be an improved rushing attack. When defenses can channel in on a passing game, it is easy to limit an offense's yards. Kansas finishes the season against Arizona, Iowa State, and Utah, each poses its own challenges, requiring this Jayhawk offense to be efficient both through the air and on the ground.
