For years, ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla has had a running feud with the Kansas basketball fans. Fraschilla, who often is on the broadcast team that covers KU games, especially during Big 12 games.
Fraschilla is a no-nonsense analyst who doesn't hesitate to criticize when he deems to deserved. There is nothing wrong with that style, as it is often a welcome change from other analysts who overuse hyperbole or sugarcoat mistakes on the court.
Kansas fans, however, do not take to well to criticism of their beloved Jayhawks. For many, Fraschilla is too hard on Kansas players during games, and in the eyes of many fans, the analyst seems to favor whoever KU is playing.
Fran Fraschilla tweets a light-hearted note to Kansas basketball fans
Last week, Fraschilla visited the Kansas facilities and watched KU practice and scrimmage. He shared his thoughts in a couple of tweets on X. In one, he discussed how impressive he thought freshman Darryn Peterson looked.
In another, he shared a broader set of impressions, including how he thought the Jayhawks' recruiting class was "outstanding," and how KU is probably underrated nationally.
He finished the message with a nod to his ongoing feud by closing with this statement - "(Oh, and remember that I still hate the Jayhawks.)" Click on "Show More" to get his whole message.
After two days of watching @KUHoops, here are some thoughts:

1. The freshman class is outstanding. A Top 3 NBA pick, a Christian Braun clone and three very athletic young big men. Tiller will be terrific, but Calderon is a steal. At least four future NBA players—in time.
2.…
While this is obviously tongue-in-cheek humor on Fraschilla's part, KU fans didn't disappoint with their reactions.
Hater

Ha. Ha. Hating the Jayhawks? I doubt. But you do get excited when the other team is taking it to them. Perhaps it's disbelief? I dunno - but it's obvious.

Oh we know you hate the Jayhawks 🙄

Just wait till you’re commentating KU games and being a homer for the opposing team and praise KU when you have to under your breath

Not all of the replies were in this same vein. Some thanked Fraschilla for his insight and for taking the time to visit campus. Others offered agreement to the analyst's thought. Some asked questions. For the most part, it was a grown-up dialogue.
Frashilla is a must-follow for college basketball fans, and in the past, he hasn't backed down from overzealous fans criticizing him. He doesn't respond rudely, but he does often defend his position. He is extremely knowledgeable about the game, and he knows the BIG 12 very well.
Fans should remember that as an analyst, it is his job to tell it like it is, even if KU fans don't agree with everything he says. He is willing to engage with fans a little bit, and he should be praised for that bravery. Fans should keep that in mind when they criticize him for criticizing the Jayhawks.
Enjoy Fraschilla when he does KU games, feel free to disagree with him, but KU fans should be classy enough to keep discussions polite. Luckily, Fraschilla understands social media and its pitfalls and has fun with the medium. Fans should, too!
