There is no greater feeling in Lawrence than when basketball season tips off. Of course, everyone loves football, but let's face it: Kansas fans get their football fix from the professional team an hour away in Kansas City. When it comes to big sports in Lawrence, basketball will always take the top spot, and this season has officially begun.
After wondering if he would return, fans got to see the return of head coach Bill Self for his 24th season as the leading man for the Jayhawks. Was this the last season opener for the legendary head coach? Who knows, but the fans welcomed him to Allen Fieldhouse in the best way possible.

That's right, the fans were literally bowing down to Self as he walked through the historic tunnel out on the court. Self will forever be a legend in Lawrence, and The Phog was ready for his return.
Allen Fieldhouse was actually rocking all night long. While it might have looked like the arena was empty before the game, by the time tipoff occurred, the entire place was rocking and ready for some Jayhawks basketball, the best season in Lawrence.

Allen Fieldhouse is one of the most daunting places to play for a reason
Whether the opponent is Fordham, Duke, Kansas State, or anyone really, Allen Fieldhouse will always be full for a basketball game. Jayhawks fans will sometimes spend a full day waiting in their chosen seat to have a chance to watch the Jayhawks play during basketball season.
Even well-known basketball analyst Jon Rothstein knows the importance of Allen Fieldhouse, making the most legendary social media post about the venue. Rothstein joked that even after resting on the seventh day, God had to create one more perfect thing, and that is Allen Fieldhouse.
And on the 8th day, God created Allen Fieldhouse.

The atmosphere in Allen Fieldhouse, or "The Phog," is unmatched, and it is why it is one of the toughest places to play in college basketball. Tre White, who made his return to Kansas for one final season thanks to a temporary injunction from an Indiana court ruling, knew what to expect from the fans, but still could not help but smile and speak highly of the fanbase during the season opener.
"This energy is unmatched," White said. "First game of the season, just trying to feel that, and that home-court advantage is a real thing here. It's amazing to be back in this energy; it was the first game of the year, and it was packed out. I'm excited."

Tre White isn't taking the atmosphere for granted in his final season with #KUHoops ⬇️@KSNTSports pic.twitter.com/xrvtQsSivp
White said it best: the energy was truly unmatched, and it was a great statement for The Phog to make that when teams come to Allen Fieldhouse, they have to deal with the atmosphere, which can be stifling for opponents.
