Christian Reeves' injury update isn't what Kansas fans wanted to hear

The new Kansas big man is dealing with a known injury that could keep him out of the gym for a bit.

Bill Self has not brought in a lot of help from the transfer portal so far this offseason, but that could also be thanks to the six incoming freshmen he has in the Class of 2026. However, with the few incoming transfers, Self needs production out of each one.

Christina Reeves was one of the first transfer Self landed out of the portal, but now it seems he could be limited going forward. Reeves made the transfer to Kansas with the staff knowing he needed to undergo a procedure for a labrum injury he suffered during the 2025-2026 season.

As reported by the basketball insider Jeff Goodman, Reeves has undergone that surgery, but his time table on a return is unknown and could take months.

Bill Self gives uplifting update on Christian Reeves' labrum surgery

Reeves underwent the surgery this week, and Kansas head coach Bill Self was able to give a great update, saying the surgery went well and he is in recovery.

The bad news is that it doesn't seem like Reeves will be in the gym much this summer due to his rehab. Self was not as forthcoming with that kind og information, saying he will be out of basketball activities for "most of summer," leaving fans wondering if he could be back sooner than later.

This surgery is one that isn't ideal for a new transfer, and there is no telling how it might affect Reeves once the season comes around. Goodman made a good point in sharing the news that if it does affect Reeves' playing time, the Jayhawks don't necessarily need 30 minutes out of him.

With new incoming freshmen and Paul Mbiya sticking around, Reeves may only need to give 20 minutes on the court and allow others to pick up the remaining time. The Charleston transfer averaged 21.4 minutes per game last season, along with 11.1 points per game and 7.8 rebounds.

Reeves just needs to be the presence in the paint Self had with Flory Bidunga and Bryson Tiller last season. Here's hoping the surgery helps in the long run.
