When the 2025 season launched, the Kansas Jayhawks’ transfer class was ranked No. 43 in the country according to 247Sports, as the Jayhawks were set to bring in Melvin Council Jr. from St. Bonaventure, Jayden Dawson from Loyola University in Chicago, and Tre White from Illinois.
Each player had their own varying expectations, but it is safe to say overall this class would be ranked much higher than 43rd if there was a reevaluation at this point.
In CBS Sports’ latest article titled “Transfer class stock watch: Evaluating how each high-major team did with players it landed in the portal,” Isaac Trotter broke down the Jayhawks’ class thus far, where Trotter gave Kansas a perfect postscript. “Good things happen when you recruit dawgs.”
An overview of Kansas’ most recent portal incomings
Melvin Council Jr. has emerged as both one of the nation’s most underrated players and Kansas’ favorite players in recent history, with comparisons lining him up amongst legends who have also walked through the confines of Allen Fieldhouse.
Yes, Council is elite at defense, and his “Dawg” persona is built on that, but his offensive ability is never talked about enough.
Council’s ability to drive to the bucket and weave past much taller defenders has kept the Jayhawks alive through various points of this season, including Kansas’ 64-61 win over the No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders, where Council notched 16 points on a 5-7 mark inside the arc and a 53.8% overall rate.
Tre White developed a niche where, despite the health of Darryn Peterson, or if Council isn’t able to get to the rim with his usual efficiency, the senior has been able to notch consistent points, which have largely gone under the radar. White’s season high sits at 22 points, which the former KU commit has reached twice, the first in a 78-66 loss to No. 5 Duke, and in Kansas’ 104-100 win over TCU. On the season, White averages 14.5 points per game with a strong 48.5% field goal rate.
Jayden Dawson has been the only transfer from this class who has not quite hit the ground running, as the former sharpshooter is yet to start a game for the Jayhawks, as he has appeared in 18 games this season. For Loyola, Dawson’s last year flashed the best potential as Dawson put up a 36.3 three-point rate, along with 13.9 points per game.
So far this season, Dawson’s season high sits at just seven points when Kansas beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a 77-46 win.
