The Kansas basketball program is in unfamiliar territory right now. Despite being three years removed from winning a national championship, the Jayhawks have found themselves at a low point over the past couple of seasons. KU is on the verge of falling outside the AP Top 25 and receiving the worst tournament seeding since head coach Bill Self took over in 2003.
Nobody has answers to why the Jayhawks are playing so poorly lately — not even their Hall of Fame leader. However, it is clear that the Jayhawks have to switch something up at some point. While he is only 62 and one of the most accomplished coaches in the sport's history, analysts from the Field of 68 podcast believe the end may be near for Self:

John Fanta thinks Bill Self's time at Kansas might be up
During the segment, Jeff Goodman asked whether it would be shocking if Bill Self decided to retire. College basketball broadcaster John Fanta thinks that it was a real possibility, saying: "I think this might be it for him."
Could this really be the end of the line for Self? He has coached two straight preseason No. 1 teams and massively underachieved with both squads. It is worth noting that the episode was filmed before Kansas suffered one of its worst losses in program history to BYU on Tuesday.
Of course, this is not the first time that fans have speculated Self’s future in college basketball. He was hospitalized during the 2023 Big 12 and NCAA tournaments due to a heart issue. People did not know whether he would return to the sidelines. Additionally, Self admitted that he was on the 'back nine' of his coaching days this November in an interview.
Some fans have been blasting him online and calling for his job after yesterday's loss. The noise will continue to grow louder with each poor performance the Jayhawks have. Should Self step away after this season, his exit will certainly not be as smooth as many might have expected.
