The Kansas Jayhawks were able to narrowly survive a road trip to Colorado without their fearless leader, Bill Self, on the sideline. After having some abnormal chest pains, Self was taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution and ended up receiving fluids.
The Jayhawks were led by former Kansas and NBA star Jacque Vaughn in their victory over the Buffaloes. Based on Self's comments about his return to the sideline this weekend, it seems like it could have been the flu or some sort of sickness going around right now.
"The situation I had was very similar to what many people have. Mine got me pretty good for a short snippet of time and then was under control," Self said. "That won't have any impact at all moving forward in any way, shape, or form."
The long-time Kansas head coach will return to the sideline for the Jayhawks on Saturday as KU takes on rival Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas, for the first installment of the Sunflower Showdown this season.
Self has dealt with health problems for the last few years, one being a series of heart ailments three years ago that kept him off the sideline for the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament. The problems he recently face though, shouldn't be an issue going forward.
Will Darryn Peterson return to the court with Bill Self on the sideline?
While the Jayhawks know they will have Self back with the team against Kansas State, the same can't be said about star guard Darryn Peterson just yet. In a season marred with injuries, Peterson is now dealing with a sprained ankle, one that he suffered against Colorado earlier this week.
Self, in his press conference on Thursday, could not confirm that Peterson would be good to go against the Wildcats on Saturday.
"I don't know yet," Self said. "He's getting treatment. He's got a pretty severe ankle sprain, but fortunately, that's all it is, a sprain. So hopefully he will be able to go and play, but we are not at a point where we can make decision on that yet."
During the Jerome Tang era at Kansas State, the Jayhawks have struggled to beat the Wildcats in Manhattan. Tang is a perfect 3-0 against KU when playing in Bramlage Coliseum, so having Peterson would be a huge boost for the Jayhawks.
