Tuesday evening saw Stokes present his commitment live on ESPN’s “NBA Tip-Off,” where the nation’s No. 1 player chose the Jayhawks and ended months of speculation.
Stokes is a game-changer for Kansas
While Bill Self and Co. had done a solid job of compiling a transfer class of Keanu Dawes, Christian Reeves and Leroy Blyden Jr., Stokes offers the centerpiece that Kansas had still lacked.
Earlier Wednesday, Self released a statement on signing Stokes, saying, "Yesterday was a big day for our program, landing the consensus number one player in the 2026 class."
Stokes was named the nation’s best player by On3, 247Sports and ESPN.
"Tyran is as versatile a youngster that I've ever recruited. He can score and he's a terrific rebounder. He's powerful and can be a great facilitator, and maybe what he does best is pass the basketball.”
Last season, the Jayhawks found themselves muddled in the half-court, often lacking invention and leading Darryn Peterson to be cornered during multiple offensive possessions, leading to off-balance shots and inconsistent offensive stretches.
With Stokes, five-star guard Taylen Kinney and Blyden all known as dangerous passers joining the program, fans can expect an uptick from Kansas’ 13.9 assists per game (No. 150th in the country) and their 75.1 points per game, which ranked No. 161st in the nation.
“He's had far more exposure to basketball than most kids his age and will come in here with the ability to live up to the lofty expectations that will be placed on him by others.”
Past connections proved vital in bringing in Stokes
A continued talking point through Stokes’ recruitment was his relationship with high school assistant coach Jamal Crawford. Crawford was once recruited to Michigan by current KU assistant Kurtis Townsend.
"Coach (Kurtis) Townsend, once again, did a tremendous job in being the point in recruiting Tyran. We look forward to welcoming him and his mother into our Kansas basketball family,” finished Self.
Townsend has been credited in the past with reeling in the likes of Josh Jackson, Andrew Wiggins, Ben McLemore, Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur, Julian Wright, Josh Selby, Sherron Collins, Frank Mason III and Devonte’ Graham. Townsend is the longest-serving assistant in Kansas men’s basketball history, having been with the program since 2001.
