The Kansas Jayhawks currently have 14 players on their roster. The NCAA allows 15, which means there is still room for one more player to join the ranks.
Out of nowhere earlier this month, it seemed like that player was going to be Mihailo Mušikić, but the big man has yet to be cleared to play.
Of course, there is also talk that former cult hero Melvin Council Jr. could be returning to the school, but that is for another day.
Mušikić offers exactly what Kansas needs
As of publishing, this is who KU can realistically employ in the frontcourt without getting exposed. Keanu Dawes, Davion Adkins, Christian Reeves and Paul Mbiya.
The problem is, Reeves, who is set for the center spot, has seen his offseason heavily disrupted with shoulder surgery, which is going to limit the senior until the start of the regular season.
When asked if there was a chance for Self’s roster to get that final player, whoever it is, to join the program, the legendary head coach didn’t give too much away.
“I think we could [add another player]. I figure one of the first questions is ‘is your roster set?’ and I think the answer is maybe?”
So far via the NCAA Transfer Portal, the Jayhawks added seven transfers and through the high school ranks, another five. The only two players who remain from last season are sophomore guard Kohl Rosario and Mbiya.
Overall, the Jayhawks are touted with having the 27th-overall transfer class and third-best class out of high school.
“We’re still looking. And so if we can make ourselves better, then we're certainly gonna try to do that. And one of the things that we want to try to do is get a big, just because of the situation with Christian and depth and all that.”
While Mbiya showed promise during his freshman season, there is still massive room for growth. In his freshman season, Mbiya totaled 26 points, 30 rebounds and 5 blocks across 107 minutes and 11 games in his freshman season.
Reeves himself isn’t necessarily stacked with minutes in the high major, so any big man who could step up and fill that void is bound to be greatly appreciated.
“So our roster's not set. It may be over, but we're still investigating different opportunities,” closed Self.
Of the top 50 centers who entered the portal, exactly zero of them are still looking for a new place to call home. As a matter of fact, you will have to go over 70 total centers in order to find a player who has yet to commit.
What is next for the Jayhawks?
The unfortunate thing is, there isn’t really much the Jayhawks can do with the regular season fast approaching. They will hope Mušikić is able to join the team as soon as possible, but beyond hope and scouting through the grassroots, Self and Co. will just have to hope that Reeves’ recovery gets ahead of schedule.
