Kansas basketball fans are in an unusual spot right now. For the second consecutive year, the Jayhawks entered the season as the preseason No. 1 and have massively failed expectations. After last night’s 91-57 loss to BYU in Provo, KU is on the verge of falling outside the AP Top 25.
Head coach Bill Self is out of explanations for his team's poor play. What is a head coach supposed to say following one of the worst losses in school history? The Hall of Famer rightfully ripped into his squad for their pitiful effort:
Bill Self did not mince his words after Kansas basketball's loss to BYU
"It was awful. We're all obviously embarrassed. We didn't bring our game tonight... That was disappointing to be outworked and out athleticed and out-skilled tonight like we were. We're not that bad of a basketball team, but certainly tonight, we were a bad team."Bill Self
The Cougars embarrassed Kansas all game on both ends of the floor. They forced 15 turnovers from the Jayhawks and held them to 36.5% field goal shooting. KU was outrebounded by double digits. Furthermore, they were able to put up 91 points and hit 14 threes on the No. 5 defense in the country.
Self has acknowledged several times during his postgame pressers this year that the team is not where it was supposed to be at this point in the season. After the loss to Utah over the weekend, he told reporters that he has clearly done an awful job getting his guys prepared for games.
As painful as it is to admit it, Bill Self’s Kansas basketball program is not what it once was. Outings like the one we saw yesterday are no longer surprising, and frankly, the Jayhawks may be in for a few more over the next handful of weeks.
