Postseason basketball has finally arrived. As a matter of fact, as of writing, the Big 12 Tournament has already gotten underway, and the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks are set to take on either the No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs, the No. 11 Colorado Buffaloes, or the No. 14 Oklahoma State Cowboys, come Thursday night.

Postseason basketball is something head coach Bill Self knows all too well, as the longtime KU head coach has led the Jayhawks to the NCAA Tournament every single season at the helm, while collecting a thrilling two national titles in his 811 games coached.

Self talks retirement ahead of Big 12 Tournament

In Tuesday’s buildup to Kansas’ quarterfinal matchup in the Big 12 Tournament, Self shut down any talk of this season being his last.

While there was no serious chatter around the program on Self’s potential exit, his 32 years in the game, combined with his recent health issues, which saw him undergo a procedure during the summer and miss out on Kansas’ 75-69 win over the Buffaloes, due to dehydration and AFib, would naturally cause questions over his future.

A season of ups and downs still has time to get things right

This season, the Jayhawks have looked like two very different sides. At home, Kansas has looked like one of, if not the best, team in the nation with wins over No. 2 Iowa State, No. 13 BYU, No. 1 Arizona, and No. 5 Houston, in what has been a 13-2 home record.

Away from home, Kansas has seen losses against three unranked teams in UCF, West Virginia, and Arizona State. Overall, Kansas’ away record sits at 5-6, which poses a lot more questions about just how strong this squad can play away from Allen Fieldhouse.

The 2025-26 season has not quite been a banner year for the Jayhawks, but KU has yet to really find its ceiling, which can make the average fan ponder if said ceiling has already been found and is lower than anticipated, or if Kansas can make a run with a newfound run of form.
