Basketball legends congratulate Bill Self on becoming Kansas Jayhawks win leader
Bill Self might try to downplay it, but the Kansas basketball head coach recently attained an impressive accolade with the Jayhawks. After defeating Michigan State in the Champions Classic on Tuesday, the Hall of Fame head coach became the all-time wins leader at the University of Kansas. Self passed the legendary Phog Allen, who previously held the No. 1 spot.
While those who account for KU's 15 vacated wins from the 2017-18 campaign argue he had already broken the record last year, Self's milestone captured attention across the realm of basketball. KU basketball's X page posted a video of various well-known figures congratulating the leader of the Jayhawks, even a few of his former rivals. How great is this?

There were memorable faces scattered throughout the entire video. One of them is former Villanova head coach Jay Wright, with whom the Jayhawks have plenty of history. He and the Wildcats defeated Kansas in the NCAA Tournament twice in three years (2016 and 2018), but Self accounted for his final college basketball game ever when he got payback in the 2022 Final Four.
The video featured Jay Bilas, former Duke player and current college basketball announcer. He has already called two of KU's three games this season and is renowned throughout the sport. Other TV personalities include announcers Kevin Harlan and Fran Fraschilla alongside analysts Rece Davis, Clark Kellogg, and Seth Greenberg.
To cap off the video, Jim Nantz surprised fans by extending his praise to Coach Self. The iconic announcer retired from college basketball after calling 31 national championship games, including the Jayhawks' titles in 2008 and 2022. Nantz still calls NFL and golf matches.
It goes without saying that Self is beloved amongst his peers and the best coach in college basketball right now. His list of achievements is endless, but he will continue to rack them up as long as he coaches the Kansas program.
