After months of waiting and speculation, top-ranked prospect Tyran Stokes announced his decision to play for the Kansas basketball team next season. It is a massive recruiting win for Bill Self, as the Jayhawks beat out Kentucky for Stokes' services.
Getting Stokes seemed to be an impossible mission for Self because Stokes signed a contract with Nike last fall. Kentucky and Oregon (another finalist for Stokes) are both Nike schools, and Kansas, of course, is with Adidas.
By his comments during his announcement on Tuesday, Stokes clearly has a connection with Self, and it seems as if the shoe company issue has been worked out.
A few weeks ago, the KU roster was barren. A mass exodus of players from last season left only two returning players—Kohl Rosario and Paul Mbiya—and four incoming freshmen - Trent Perry, Davion Adkins, Tylan Kinney, and Luke Barnett.
Kansas roster looks strong and deep after Tyran Stokes addition
Self added Keanu Dawes, Leroy Blyden Jr., Christian Reeves, and now Stokes. Suddenly, the roster looks deep, and the Jayhawks still have plenty of room to add more depth.
A quick breakdown by position looks like this:
- Point guard—Kinney, Blyden Jr.
- Shoot guard—Rosario, Blyden Jr. Barnett
- Small forward—Stokes, Perry, Barnet
- Big forward—Dawes, Adkins
- Center—Reeves, Mbiya, Adkins

What are your thoughts on the Jayhawks’ roster? 🤔⬇️ pic.twitter.com/D6cegFBCph
It is far too early to know what the starting five will look like, but this looks pretty good right now. What is nice about how this roster sits right now, is there is plenty of flexibility. Players like Adkins, Blyden, and Barnett probably can slide into multiple slots. This gives Self plenty of matchup options for him to play different lineups.
One thing Self must do a better job at is developing the end of his bench better. He tends to restrict his rotations to seven or eight players. This roster, as it stands before more additions, looks like it could go a full ten deep. KU will add more pieces to this group, giving him even more options.
Not all players will develop at the same pace, so surely a couple of these guys might not be ready for primetime minutes. That's okay. Self can still find some veterans in the portal. Only Dawes and Reeves are seniors. Everyone else is either a freshman or a sophomore. That is a lot of youth!
It will be interesting to see how far up the early rankings Stokes will take KU. The Jayhawks clearly now have the top freshman recruiting class, and it has a solid portal class as well, with room to add more.
Kansas should be competitive, not only in the Big 12 but nationally. If the youngsters develop as hoped, this team could be a nightmare for opponents next season.
