Former Kansas basketball standout Kelly Oubre Jr. was the victim of a freak accident when he was struck by a car near his home in Philadelphia yesterday.

In a shocking news report last night, it was revealed that Philadelphia 76ers forward and a one-and-done with the Kansas Jayhawks, Kelly Oubre Jr., suffered severe injuries when a car hit him while crossing the street.

The vehicle struck him near his home. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital at around 6:00 p.m. CT for undisclosed injuries, and he was in stable condition. The injuries he sustained are not expected to be season-ending, but he will miss ‘significant time.’

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN later reported that he was released from the hospital and will work with Philly’s coaching staff to work his way back onto the hardwood.

The New Orleans native is in the midst of a fantastic year with the ‘6ers after he was a late-season addition to join ex-Jayhawk and the 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid. He is averaging 16.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while taking on a much more extensive role in the offense with James Harden being dealt to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Oubre has dealt with injuries before, appearing in 48 contests one year ago, but only those of a basketball-related nature. His impressive inaugural season with the 76ers will come to a screeching halt as he battles injuries that could take him several months to recover from.

A top-five-rated recruit out of Findlay Prep, Oubre played with the Kansas basketball team in the 2014-15 season, starting 27 of 36 games and averaging 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds. He declared for the NBA Draft following KU’s second-round loss to Wichita State and was selected 15th overall by the Atlanta Hawks. Oubre has also had stints with the Wizards, Suns, Warriors, and Hornets.

There is an ongoing investigation into the incident.

Jayhawk nation extends its deepest prayers to Kelly and his family in these difficult times.
