Kansas Basketball No. 2 Best Point Guard Under Bill Self: Sherron Collins (2006-2010)
Sherron came up with multiple big plays in the 2008 national title game, including a steal and a 3-pointer. More importantly, though, he got the ball to Mario for his historic shot that sent the game to overtime.
He returned after that season to be the leader during his junior and senior years, averaging 18.9 and 15.5 points per game, respectively. Across his KU career, he averaged 13.2 points, 3.9 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game.
Sherron was fun to watch. He could get to the rim at will and would hit big three after big three. The Chicago native shot 37.7% from beyond the arc over his career. He averaged eight points and nearly four assists a game in the 2008 Big Dance and had 11 points, six assists, and four rebounds in the title game.
Kansas Basketball No. 1 Best Point Guard Under Bill Self: Mario Chalmers (2005-2008)
Mario’s Miracle is a shot that will live on in Kansas basketball history forever. While he may be known for hitting the game-tying three at the end of regulation against Memphis to lead KU to victory, he was dominant throughout his three years in Lawrence.
He has career averages of 12.2 points, 3.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. He had quick hands and would get in defensive lanes, constantly hitting clutch shots. He averaged 14.8 points per game in the championship run, including 18 in the title game.
Chalmers would use that to propel himself into the NBA Draft where he would help carry LeBron James to two NBA Championships as the starting point guard for the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013. He was a winner everywhere he went, and the Alaskan kid delivered when it mattered most, making him the best point guard in the Bill Self era.
