Kansas basketball: 10 best Jayhawks point guards in the Bill Self era
By Tony Zuzzio
Kansas Basketball No. 4 Best Point Guard Under Bill Self: Devonte’ Graham (2014-2018)
Devonte’ was the ultimate Jayhawk. He played four years with career averages of 12.3 points, 4.5 assists, 1.4 steals, and 3.1 rebounds per game. He was a sniper from 3-point range and could get his shot off whenever he wanted and drilled big shots.
Now playing with the San Antonio Spurs, Graham averaged 17.3 points his senior year and led his team to a Final Four (that is now vacated). But I was there when they beat Duke in Elite Eight in Omaha, and it was a great game and a thrilling win. He guided the team in his senior year and averaged 17.4 points in the NCAA Tournament before falling to Villanova in the Final Four, 95-79. He shot 40.9% on 3-pointers over his career.
Kansas Basketball No. 3 Best Point Guard Under Bill Self: Frank Mason III (2013-2017)
Frank was a bulldog and could get any shot he wanted. He could finish with contact at the rim and hit clutch threes. Mason was one of my favorite Jayhawks to watch.
In his senior year, he averaged 20.9 points and 5.2 assists per game to carry the Jayhawks to an Elite Eight appearance as he was college National Player of the Year. He started 113 of 145 career games with averages of 13.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals on 42% shooting from 3-point range.
Although his Jayhawk career ended with a loss to Oregon, he brought home the Wooden Award following the season’s conclusion.
