Kansas Basketball Experiment No. 5: Giving Johnny Furphy freedom within the offense

Johnny Furphy remains questionable for the scrimmage due to lingering shin splints, but signs point to him being deemed available in a limited capacity. If he does wind up seeing the floor, the coaching staff needs to let him play to his strengths and play him in a role that he’s comfortable with.

Unlike every other player on the Kansas basketball roster, the Australian freshman did not play during the Puerto Rico trip. That is because he committed to play at KU the day their flight landed. Factor in that he reclassed from 2024 to join the Jayhawks, and Furphy is extremely behind the rest of the group.

There is no denying his talent, but in order for Furphy to catch up with the rest of the ‘Hawks, he must continue to learn the system that Bill Self operates.
