Trick or Treat: 2023 Kansas Jayhawks Basketball and Football Edition

Being Kansas Jayhawks fans, we have had many great treats over the years, with our sports programs and several tricks while watching some of our teams struggle. This is a breakdown of some of the tricks and treats we experienced over the 2023 athletic seasons.

Tricks

Jalon Daniels’ Back: Sour Patch Kids

This is not a shot at Jalon or his back, just the injury situation. Like Sour Patch Kids, when they hit, they hit right. But when that back is out and not playing, you have that sour look on your face wanting more and wondering what happened. Here is to wishing Jalon a full recovery and to get back on to the field and lead us to many more victories this year and a bowl win!

Marcus Adams Jr: Candy Corn

Marcus’ tenure at KU was short-lived as he arrived in the summer practiced for a bit and realized he wasn’t cut out to be a Jayhawk and left. From there, he went to Gonzaga and flamed out. Shortly after, he finally landed at BYU so we could watch him in the Big 12. Like Candy Corn, his lifespan as a Jayhawk was short-lived. Candy Corn is just not good enough to make the roster, and if you see it in your kid’s bag, go ahead and throw it away and save you the trouble several months later when still sitting there providing no value.

Arterio Morris: Butterfingers

While Arterio could have been a vital piece to the preseason No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks, he has found himself in yet another sticky situation. Like Butterfingers that look great on the outside and have potential, you often find yourself with a sticky, bad feeling in the back of your teeth. This describes the situation all around. While KU gave the young man a second opportunity, those slippery butter fingers dropped the ball and his opportunity.

Treats

Bill Self: Snickers

Bill Self has consistently been the bar that we measure against for KU Sports. He is a classic and keeps us happy with a winning percentage of nearly 82% since he has been at KU. So, relax Jayhawks fans. KU Basketball and Bill Self is back. Grab a Snickers and get ready for the fun, because we all know you are not you when KU basketball is not playing.

Jason Bean: Male Hershey Bar

He may not be your first pick and can drive you nuts at times, but he is solid. Jason is sitting waiting to be picked, and when he is called on, has proven to do great things. Shoutout for the huge win over OU! As we have seen in the last couple of weeks, he can have his moments that make you go nuts and then just flash greatness with his speed and playmaking. We should not hate Jason for what he is not but enjoy him for what he is. A great backup who has proven he can come in and be the starter and win big-time games!

Kansas Women’s Basketball & Coach Schneider: M&M’s

Big shout out to Coach Schneider and the women’s basketball team for being WNIT Champions for the 2022-23 season. They had a great postseason run. With local Shawnee Mission West 5-star S’Mya Nichols being the newest addition to an already solid veteran-returning squad, even greater things are on the horizon. Can’t wait to see these girls go on a run and do even more damage in the NCAA Tournament this year. Like M&M’s, they can be overlooked at times, but these girls are talented and we’ll watch these games by the handful and enjoy.

Lance Leipold: Twix

It doesn’t matter if you are a Left or Right Twix kind of person. They are both proven to be winners. With constant pre-snap movement and different plays and looks on the left and right sides, this squad is exciting to watch. Lance is a classic, just a plain winner wherever he goes. We will enjoy watching him consistently lead us to bowl games for years to come. With OU and Texas departing at the end of the year, the top dawg spot on the conference is open. With his coaching, we have a great chance to ascend to that perch.

Jalen Wilson: Payday

Jalen stepped up to be the leader that we needed last year. He averaged 20.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game to highlight a First Team All-American season. He became KU’s 32nd Consensus All-American First Team selection ever. Jalen was a key piece in our 2022 national championship championship season and came back to lead our squad last year. He earned his Payday by being drafted by the Brooklyn Nets. Payday is just a classic go-to. Can’t go wrong. It’s the people’s choice candy bar. Jalen worked hard got everything out of his abilities and earned that Payday. Looking forward to watching his success in the NBA.

Happy Halloween to Jayhawk Nation! Hoping the rest of the year is filled with more Treats than Tricks!
