Kansas basketball was selected to win the Big 12 in the 2023-24 preseason basketball poll.

The Kansas Jayhawks are searching for their third national championship under head coach Bill Self and their third consecutive Big 12 regular season title. According to the conference’s preseason poll, at least one of those scenarios will transpire this season. KU is a giant favorite over their counterparts to win the regular season championship.

Each of the 14 basketball coaches in the Big 12 assembled an ordered list from 1-14 to determine the top schools in the conference. It is the first year since the 2011-12 season that there won’t be ten teams competing in league play. Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah will join the following year to form a 16-school superconference, but they are all Pac-12 schools at the moment.

Three of the four newcomers were voted to finish in the bottom four in the conference, while the 2023 Big 12 Tournament champions, Texas, landed third on the poll. There are other familiar faces besides Houston, a team that is expected to be an immediate top dog in the Big 12. Here is the official coaches poll:

Parentheses signify how many coaches voted that school to finish in first place

  1. Kansas basketball (12)
  2. Houston basketball (2)
  3. Texas basketball
  4. Baylor basketball
  5. TCU basketball
  6. Kansas State basketball
  7. Iowa State basketball
  8. Texas Tech basketball
  9. West Virginia basketball
  10. Oklahoma State basketball
  11. Cincinnati basketball
  12. Oklahoma basketball
  13. BYU basketball
  14. UCF basketball

Kansas basketball topping off the list comes as no surprise, as the Jayhawks are widely regarded as the favorite to accomplish preseason No. 1 honors. Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson and returning starters Dajuan Harris, Kevin McCullar, and KJ Adams will lead the charge for what is expected to be one of Bill Self’s most dominant squads yet. While KU’s depth remains a question mark, fans should be excited to watch yet another team with high championship aspirations.
