Potential Outcome No. 2: Multi-game suspensions for Bill Self and Kurtis Townsend

As I mentioned before, Kansas already suspended Self and assistant coach Townsend for four games last season. However, a similar or even longer suspension could be in play for either coach this year.

The involvement of these two men in the case is still uncertain. Although it is hard to believe that all of this was going on behind the back of the head of the basketball program, the only thing we know is that Self communicated with Adidas bag man TJ Gassnola.

Besides the sketchy comments about missing out on Deandre Ayton, there is nothing TOO incriminating in those texts to the point that the NCAA is going to want to rip Self’s head off. Let’s not act like similar stuff wasn’t going down at other schools.

If I had to guess, Townsend would get the short end of the stick in this scenario. He had been accused of doing some of Self’s dirty work, and the NCAA probably would prefer to punish an assistant rather than a Hall of Fame head coach. I don’t think Self will get anything more than six games at the worst. Townsend could be seeing something more like eight or ten. Will Wade got ten and he committed far more egregious acts. This won’t sting too bad if it does happen.
