The buzz of Cooper Flagg potentially becoming a Kansas basketball player continues to grow. Can Bill Self pull off one of his best recruiting moves yet?

The Kansas Jayhawks have been turning up the heat on the high school recruiting trail this summer, already landing a top 5 player in the 2024 recruiting class. Kansas basketball has already hosted official visits for a handful of 5-star players. The attention has now turned to the most prized high school recruit going back to probably Andrew Wiggins.

Cooper Flagg is the No. 1 player in the country, and the Jayhawks are right in the thick of it to land him. Flagg has long been considered a Duke lean ever since he’s been getting recruited, but that is not stopping Bill Self from making some serious noise to land him.

There are some things that favor the Jayhawks in what seems to be a Kansas vs. Duke battle for Flagg, and coaching is definitely a positive for KU in this battle. The proximity to home could play a factor in this recruitment — Flagg is from Maine, but we’ve seen Kansas get a fair amount of recruits from the Northeast in the Self era.

With the assumption of Hunter Dickinson moving on after this upcoming season, it will open some opportunities for Flagg to get some massive NIL deals, which could further entice him to commit to Kansas. I’d expect Duke to use 2022 No. 1 NBA Draft pick and former Blue Devil Paolo Banchero as someone to compare Flagg to. Duke has many more alumni in the NBA compared to Kansas, which could help them land Flagg.

Kansas basketball seems to have all of the momentum in this recruitment as of now. Things will continue to heat up for Flagg going into October with an official visit planned during Late Night in the Phog. Ideally, Flagg loves his visit so much that he decides to cancel his second visit with Duke — which is planned after his trip to Lawrence — but that seems far-fetched to happen.
