Houston Cougars — 17-14 Win vs UTSA

It wasn’t pretty. It probably didn’t make Houston fans extraordinarily happy. Regardless, Houston escaped with a win in their season opener against UTSA. Houston led by just a field goal at halftime, and took a 17-7 lead into the fourth quarter. UTSA used a 15-play, 94-yard drive to pull back within three. They then had two different tries at stopping Houston on third down during the ensuing possession, but the Cougars were able to convert on both. That allowed them to run out the clock and survive a major scare in their opener. Donovan Smith threw for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns, with Samuel Brown being the recipient of nearly half that yardage (106 yards).

Houston travels about 10 minutes down the road next week, as they face a Rice team that gave Texas a game for about a half.
