Kansas football came out of its Week 1 contest victorious, but several Big 12 schools struggled greatly in their matchups.

Big 12 football yesterday was… something.

It was not a good day for the conference in Week 1. The newcomers did their job, but four Big 12 schools lost their home opener, with some games being more embarrassing than others.

West Virginia was the obvious pick to lose today. Coming off a 5-7 season, the Mountaineers didn’t stand a chance against the 7th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions.

One of the most highly anticipated Big 12 games yesterday was between Colorado and TCU. It was the first game head coach Deion ‘Prime’ Sanders was at the helm for in Boulder, and it comes with the recent news of CU joining the conference after this athletic season.

In a thriller that went down to the wire, Sanders’ son, Shadeur, threw for a school-record 510 yards and led the Buffs to a 45-42 victory over the No. 17-ranked Horned Frogs. It certainly wasn’t the bounce-back game Sonny Dykes had hoped for after losing in the national championship game 65-7.

TCU was favored heavily in that outing, but there were even worse losses than that.

Baylor and Texas Tech headline horrific Big 12 football day

Baylor was a sleeper candidate to rebound in the conference after having a down year in 2022. But instead, they have started off their new season with an upset.

Texas State comfortably took down Baylor 42-31… IN WACO. The Bears let a team that was 4-8 in the Sun Belt and hadn’t eclipsed six wins since 2014 beat down on them. Keep in mind that Baylor’s defense is typically the strong suit of the roster.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech fell 35-33 to Wyoming in double overtime. The Red Raiders couldn’t connect on the two-point try in the second extra period, and a Sam Scott run carried Wyoming to victory.

Although it was a road game in a pretty hostile environment, very few people could have imagined some of the best schools in Texas would be losing to schools like this.
