Kansas basketball is in the running for a generational prospect. Cooper Flagg will take an official visit to Lawrence this fall.
The Kansas Jayhawks are pulling out all the stops for the top player in the 2024 recruiting class, Cooper Flagg. Arguably the most hyped-up high school player in the past decade, Travis Branham of 247 Sports revealed that he plans to visit KU this fall, as well as Duke and UConn.
After reclassifying from 2025 to 2024, schools have been making every effort to lure him over. Even though he is a year younger than his counterparts, Flagg can match up with the best of them.
Duke has long been considered the favorite to capture the Flagg. He took an unofficial to Durham earlier this month, receiving a crystal ball to them shortly after. It will be a monumental task for head coach Bill Self to pull him away from the Blue Devils.
Flagg is the consensus No. 1 player among all major recruiting websites and can do anything that is asked of him on the floor. Whether it be his ball-handling skills, jump shot, or two-way ability, he figures to be one of the best players in the NBA in due time.
He will be on the KU campus during Late Night in the Phog 2023, which occurs on Oct. 6. Flagg will appear at one of the most well-known preseason events that any school hosts. The dates for his other visits have not yet been announced.
The announcement gives fans some clarity on his recruitment. Aside from Duke, no team seems to be leading in the race to land him.
The chances of Kansas basketball receiving a commitment from Cooper Flagg are slim. However, we witnessed first-hand what the Jayhawk coaching staff can unexpectedly pull off when 5-star center Flory Bidunga shocked the college basketball world and pledged to KU.
This is his scouting report from Adam Finkelstein:
“Cooper Flagg is an elite two-way prospect. His instincts are off the charts on both ends of the floor and he competes with a quiet type of killer instinct. He’s a defensive standout and particularly dominant as an off-ball defender. In fact, he’s as good of an underclassman shot-blocker as I’ve seen at his size. Offensively, he’s an excellent passer with a good foundation of early skill and developing playmaking ability. His footwork is excellent. His shooting and handling both good and continuously improving. He doesn’t necessarily need to be the focal point on that end of the floor, but he’s shown he’s plenty capable of it. Physically, frame’s Flagg is solid enough to absorb contact now and will only add additional muscle mass in the coming years.”
