4. Starting spots at defensive end are up for grabs

Kansas lost Lonnie Phelps, Caleb Sampson, Sam Burt, and Malcolm Lee to the NFL this offseason. The defensive line is undergoing an absolute revamp, and there will be new starters at all four spots in 2023.

Austin Booker is a name that has stood out to coaches. A transfer from Minnesota, his teammates have described him as a ‘freak’ during practices. The 6-foot-6 edge rusher is pushing for the starting spot on the weakside that Phelps left open.

Besides him, though, not many guys have asserted themselves as standouts on the defensive front besides Devin Phillips. It’s possible that no player even records a five-sack season because the coaching staff will be throwing out various defensive packages over the course of the season. From the look of it, Kansas has yet to find a three-down player off the edge.
