Kansas football picked up its first commitment in the Class of 2025 by snagging Oklahoma-based quarterback David McComb.

Very few players in the 2025 recruiting class have committed thus far, but the Kansas Jayhawks just received their first verbal from an incoming junior. Head coach Lance Leipold’s coaching staff has already begun recruiting talent for the program’s future.

David McComb pledged to Kansas football on his unofficial visit to Lawrence yesterday. An unranked quarterback from Edmond, Oklahoma, McComb fell in love with the university as soon as he stepped onto campus. He attends Memorial High School and is coming off a sophomore year in which he received eight NCAA Division I offers.

It is a dead period for NCAA recruiting, so it is unique for a player to commit at this time, let alone someone who is not a senior. Schools are not able to reach out to players at this time, meaning McComb must have contacted Kansas directly to coordinate a visit.

He has sound throwing mechanics and is able to put some zip on the pigskin. Even as a sophomore in high school, his film looks far more refined than the average high school quarterback. McComb figures to receive a 3-star rating by recruiting sites by the end of his junior year.

In addition to his arm talent, McComb can be dangerous on the ground — a tool that will make him even more valuable to the roster. According to 247 Sports, he averaged 9.4 yards per carry last season on 31 attempts. His Hudl page claims he runs a 4.65 40-yard dash, which is a very good number for a 6-foot-3, 215 lbs 17-year-old.

McComb cited quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski as a massive reason for why he chose Kansas. “His favorite two words are just be loose and sudden. He said he likes the plays I can make spontaneously on the run and stuff,” McComb told JayhawkSlant. “And he thinks that my ceiling is a lot higher than what I think it is. He feels like he can develop me a lot, which is really cool.”

This marks the earliest time frame a recruit has ever committed to KU in the Lance Leipold era. The world is starting to take notice of Kansas football in a hurry.
