Kansas basketball: Ranking each of the Jayhawks one and done players
No. 7: Kelly Oubre Jr. (2014-2015)
Kansas basketball career stats: 36 games, 9.3 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 44.4% FG
Oubre is one of the more bland names on this list. He didn’t wow the fanbase at Kansas, but when you compare him to some of the other one-and-dones, it’s hard to criticize how he played. He was pretty darn good for a teenager, especially in the second half of his freshman year.
At one point in the season during a stretch from early February to mid-March, he averaged 12.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. In all fairness, the entire 2014-15 Kansas basketball season was weird, as there was no clear leader, and several players stepped up at different times.
Even as a youngster, Oubre served as KU’s glue guy. He was elite defensively, using his long frame to contest shots and get into passing lanes. He was one of the Jayhawks’ most important pieces by the time conference play commenced.
He came into college as a 5-star recruit, yet he averaged eight minutes played throughout his first seven appearances. That would make it pretty easy to get discouraged. However, Oubre kept his chin up and bought into the Bill Self system, which paid off for him in the long run. He now has enjoyed a nearly decade-long career with four different NBA organizations.
